My work explores beauty, personal and witnessed trauma, and resiliency.
My paintings are human scale and are oftentimes of family members and friends, set against intangible, placeless, backgrounds of serene color. These portraits seek to highlight the humanity of these subjects who, despite trauma, return the spectator’s gaze.
Growing up in the West Indies, I was inspired by the natural beauty of the landscape and the rich palette of bright and vibrantly colored houses. Having the freedom to explore in gardens filled with bountiful foliage, was when I began making line drawings. Out of intuition and process, organic and representational forms emerge, a universe of people, objects and fauna based on memory and feeling.
Through both my paintings and drawings, I pay homage to the imagined growth, evolution and unplanned possibilities of my subjects as the main characters in this form of unbounded, visual storytelling.
